Ameritech Telephone Industry Services
In 1995, Webfarm worked as a contractor for Ameritech Telephone Industry Services
on a project to develop a turn-key Internet Services offering that Ameritech
could offer to it's Local Exchange Carriers (LECs) that they in turn could sell
to their subscribers. The project, called "Town Square" included everything
from the provisioning of bandwith to handle Intenet connections and dial-in
terminals that would be installed at the LEC to the client software and help
desk services so that each LEC could offer a quality Internet connection package.
Webfarm helped with the specification of proccesses and practices as well as
the development of the end-user installation package.
In addition to deliverables that were directly related to the "Town Square"
product, Webfarm developed a prototype web collaboration environment so that
the sales force which was scattered throughout the Midwest could communicate
more directly and effectively and would not have to wait for a quarterly group
meeting to exchange information and practices. In 1995, this extranet idea was
rather novel and experimental. The compelling argument beyond the immediacy
of communication and the many-to-many benefits of threaded discussion was that
the sales people could become more familiar with the Internet by using it as
a business tool so that when they tried to sell the "Town Square"
product, they could approach the LEC with the most up to date information and
demonstrate the benefits of the product directly.
