Dublin Core Metadata Initiative

From the DCMI website: "The Dublin Core Metadata Initiative is an open forum engaged in the development of interoperable online metadata standards that support a broad range of purposes and business models."

The "Dublin Core" is a set of fifteen attributes or fields of metadata that can be broadly applied to a wide variety of disciplines. The DC element set consists of the following items:

  • Title
  • Creator
  • Subject
  • Description
  • Publisher
  • Contributor
  • Date
  • Type
  • Format
  • Identifier
  • Source
  • Language
  • Relation
  • Coverage
  • Rights

This element set covers a good deal of the metadata that will be stored about an object. With the qualifiers, you can get even more specific about the object description. The intent here is for interoperability of metadata so however you choose to use the elements, your object description should be able to make sense at different levels of detail (not just the most detailed level)
